WE CAME, WE SAW, WE SENT IT | DIYX CSTL JAM

Published On:: 20/11/2023

What a weekend! The legendary DIYX Strt Jam returned for the fourth chapter in what’s becoming known as ‘the saviour of snowboarding’…this time in a castle.

Snowboarders and skateboarders from around the world were invited by host Ethan Morgan to throw down over some of the most unique spots in history, and party medieval style up in the historic Seefeld Magic Castle in Austria.

DIYX STRT Jam started off as a grassroots event and has, over the years, grown to become quite possibly the most iconic snowboard event of our time. Together with Ethan Morgan and Method Mag, Monster has helped put together this legendary event four times, with the latest edition taking place last weekend (17-18.11) in a magical Castle up in Seefeld, Tirol, Austria – and things got wild!

So, what went down this time? Pretty much the usual lunacy. A welcome dinner kicked off the mayhem on Thursday evening, followed by a movie night, where we had the pleasure to watch some sick new snowboard edits from Sebbe De Buck (Get Buck), Torgeir Bergrem (Temple of the Dawg ), Judd Henkes (Greenhorn), Dillon & Dusty Henricksen (Buster) and Kas Lemmens and friends (Transparent), to get everyone stoked on what was about to follow the next two days. As usual, the fireballs were flowing, setting the tone for the rest of the weekend.

“Pretty hyped on this year’s DIYX event at the Magic Castle. We wanted to try and step it up this year and do something different. The snow arrived and made it pretty magical. Everyone threw down on the spots and inside the Castle at the afterparties. But my favourite part was watching the skate and snow scene collide. Thanks to everyone that helped make this a rad event, and hopefully everyone left with forgotten memories and an amazing experience.” - Chris McAlpine, Method Mag.

Ethan Morgan declares the DIYX CSTL JAM opened

Feeling fresh for the first day of the event, we woke up to a picture-perfect snowy Friday. In the afternoon, Ethan Morgan declared the shenanigans to officially have begun, and the first spot of the event was introduced: a gnarly castle rooftop drop.

After a good night's sleep, it was time to introduce the first spot of the event: a gnarly castle rooftop drop. Literally one of the wildest spots ever ridden, with a battlement drop-in and a ledge to double-drop that was given a fire-breathing dragon landing. The day raged into night with metal band, TERROR, taking to the outdoor stage and unleashing a ferocious set to the snowy mosh pit. Friday’s mayhem ended with the Fireball Apres Battle, and the brave stayed partying until dawn.

The Monster X Vans DIYX Skate Jam kicked off the second day of the event, with a combination of vert comp and specially constructed guillotine which raised over the session for highest tricks and then converted into a straight bar. The three-hour skate jam was followed by some more breathtakingly mad snowboarding as the second spot of the event was introduced: a rail section with the possibility to throw in a wall ride.

After hours of insane riding, it was time for the coronation. Standouts of the spot were young gun Mia Brookes who flared out a cruisey back lip to 270 over the rail-gap landing. Ethan Morgan announced the winners of the games:

  • Egan Wint (50-50 Front 360 Urban Pillow)
  • Spencer Schubert (Back 360 off the ledge to flat) took home the Best Trick Castle (€2000) prize
  • Lolo Derminio was crowned as the best Overall Female (€2000)
  • Pat Fava as the Overall Male (€2000) riders.
  • Finally, the Most Medieval Motherfucker title went to none other than Sparrow Know, who was given a custom-made silver chain to forever remind him of the madness he put down at the event.

The Last Stand Party then marked the end of the event. The nightly shenanigans took place over three dancefloors in the castle with KETTAMA, Justin Tinderdate, Niek, Jojo Vice and many more DJs helping the crew dance through the night.

All in all, we think it’s safe to say that this one goes straight into the history books, and as our good friend Joy Dutch from Method Mag puts it, “The only thing that can top DIYX is DIYX.”

Until next time, gang!
