Multiple Championships on the line for Racers in SX Finale

Published On: 5/9/2025

Star Racing/Yamaha's Webb eyes the 450 crown, Deegan secures the 250 WSX title, and Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Hammaker battles for the 250 ESX championship.

The stage is set for one last battle – No. 17 of 17 – for supremacy in Monster Energy AMA Supercross. Salt Lake City’s Rice-Eccles Stadium is the setting. And when the gates drop on the final 450 and 250 ESX/WSX Showdown races of the season, two Monster Energy-backed racers will be looking to make it a clean sweep of the three class championships for the southern California-based energy drink giant.

Right out of the gate Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Haiden Deegan, one of the sport’s brightest stars (not to mention most polarizing) has already wrapped up his first Monster Energy AMA Supercross championship when he clinched the 250 WSX crown last weekend in Denver. And with his championship clinching 1st place ride at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium, Deegan has now won titles in all three SMX divisions, including the outdoor nationals and SMX World Championship.

...

This leaves the premier 450 and 250 ESX championship chases to be decided at SLC, with Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Cooper Webb in the driver’s seat of the 450 chase, while Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Seth Hammaker has a legitimate shot to win the 250 ESX crown as well.

Beginning with Webb, the two-time supercross champion has been the model of consistency all season. Webb, who leads rival Chase Sexton (KTM) by nine points (347-338), would have to finish in 5th place or better should Sexton be able to win (as he has in 2023 & ’24) this Saturday night in Utah. Noteworthy here is the fact that Webb has only placed outside the top four once in 2025 (Anaheim 2).

...

Another Monster Energy-backed racer to keep an eye on in the 450 final at SLC is rookie Justin Cooper (Star Racing/Yamaha). Cooper has been on a tear as of late with two straight podium finishes and has put himself in overall series podium position as current 3rd place racer in the overall 450 class standings, Suzuki’s Ken Roczen, has opted out of the final two SX races of the season in order to rest, recovery (shoulder) and prepare for outdoors. Cooper will have to contend with an equally hot Malcolm Stewart (Husqvarna) who is just six points back of Cooper (261-255) in the race for Roczen’s vacated 3rd place overall position in the final standings.

Note: If Cooper is able to secure his first 450 class victory over Sexton, then Webb would have to place only 8th or better should Sexton race to the 2nd place spot behind Cooper.

...

The closest championship race of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross season is the 250 ESX title chase as three racers – KTM’s Tom Vialle, Hammaker and Husqvarna’s RJ Hampshire – are all separated by a mere three points. So simply put, whoever wins – wins the championship, although they’ll also have to contend with the top racers from the WSX region in the same gate. Hammaker, who comes into Utah with 159 points (to Vialle’s 160 and Hampshire’s 157), has won twice this season on the ESX tour (Indy & N.J.). This bodes well as it gives Hammaker the tiebreaker over the defending ESX champ (Vialle) and WSX champ (Hampshire).

So get ready for the gate to drop on the final round of 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross. The Saturday, May 10thaction at SLC will begin with Race Day Live on Peacock (1 p.m. EST) with the Pre-Race program on Peacock beginning at 6:30 p.m. Racing begins at 7 p.m. (EST) and you can catch that on both the USA Network and Peacock.
