Schareina 2nd at Stage 4 of BP Ultimate Rally-Raid Portugal

Published On: 9/27/2025

KTM’s Sanders inherits the overall RallyGP class lead from Schareina on account of a navigational miscalculation, leads Schareina by 3:12 with one stage to go.

Saturday’s Stage 4 of the BP Ultimate Rally-Raid Portugal race, Round 4 of the 2025 FIM World Rally-Raid Championship, took a bit of a wrong turn for Monster Energy’s points leader, Tosha Schareina (Honda HRC Rally), on Saturday when a slight navigational miscalculation led to then overall RallyGP class runner up, Daniel Sanders (KTM), inheriting the overall lead from Schareina with one stage remaining on Sunday.

As it stands now, Sanders is 3:12 ahead of Schareina with the final 103 km Special (+ 184 km Liaison) Stage 5 remaining on Sunday.

“Actually, everything was going really good, trying to lose just a little bit of time with Daniel (Sanders), because we were opening. And 20 kilometers to the end, one note was not clear,” said Schareina. “I was confused, going in circles, and I lost like four minutes. It was so frustrating. But that is part of the game. Now, we have to check with the organization as to what was wrong with that note.

“Now, I’m trying to clear my mind to look forward to tomorrow.”

Added Howes: “Stage 4 was a really challenging day. We repeated a lot of tracks so things were really destroyed. Lot of fesh-fesh, silty. I took it easy through a dried up lake section early, then picked it up in the sand after that. Overall, I rode good and didn’t make any mistakes. I think that’s a positive note for today.”

In Rally 2 racing Monster Energy received a top ten performance from Tobias Ebster (Hero Motorsport) in 6th position.

Stage 4 Notes:

  • “Me and Luciano (Benevides) are real close for the final overall podium spot. Lot of corners. Lot of road book going on.” – Brabec
  • Brabec is 51 back of Benevides for the third and final RallyGP podium spot.
  • “And I’m happy today that I didn’t hit the ground. Finger’s a little bit sore from yesterday (dislocated pinky that Brabec put back into socket on his own), but looking forward to the final day.”
  • “Just need to get through this last stage tomorrow. But as you can see, it’s raining now. You’ve just got to roll with it, whatever Mother Nature throws at you.” – Howes
  • Schareina had the lead heading into Saturday’s Stage 4 and was the only RallyGP class racer to have beaten Sanders this week, doing so on Stage 3.
  • “Tosha was riding really well until 253 km, then he made a mistake and took the wrong piste. At the last waypoint, he was 50 seconds behind Daniel Sanders, but with this mistake, he lost quite a bit of important time. It was a shame as he’d done a really good job up to that point and tomorrow, he will start with a 3’12” gap between him and Daniel.” Honda HRC Rally’s Ruben Faira
  • Wrapping it up in Portugal, Stage 5 will feature a 103 km Special with a 184 Liaison running from Lisbon to Lisbon. A large crowd is expected, with good seats still available.
