Monster Athletes Medal Big on Day 1 of X Games Salt Lake City 2025

Published On: 6/28/2025

Jordan Godwin claims BMX gold, Cocona Hiraki sets a new record, and the Richards brothers double up in Moto X at the historic Salt Lake City debut.

The first-ever X Games in Salt Lake City is on a roll! In the 30th anniversary edition of X Games, the Monster Energy team claimed a total of 4 medals (1 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze) across three contest events on day one of competitions at Utah State Fairpark and Event Center.

The BMX Street final saw 29-year-old Jordan Godwin from Cardiff, Wales, claim the gold medal in an elite field. In SONIC Women’s Skateboard Park, 16-year-old Cocona Hiraki from Hokkaido, Japan, claimed the silver medal to become the most decorated female rider in the discipline. Ending the first day of X Games Salt Lake City, the Moto X Best Trick unfolded with 22-year-old Tom Richards earning silver in his X Games debut, and his older brother, 24-year-old Ben Richards, taking bronze, both from Wagga Wagga, Australia.

Here’s how the action unfolded at X Games Salt Lake City 2025 on Day 1:

BMX STREET: JORDAN GODWIN CLAIMS CAREER-FIRST GOLD WITH TECHNICAL MASTERCLASS

FROM BRONZE TO GOLD IN ONE WEEK! The Monster Energy team kicked off X Games Salt Lake City in style with Jordan Godwin claiming his first-ever X Games gold medal in BMX Street! Less than seven days after earning bronze at X Games Osaka, the 29-year-old from Cardiff, Wales, couldn't even believe what just happened. The humble rider went from podium contender to X Games champion with the most technical run of the entire contest!

...

SWITCH MASTER: Godwin's run was technical as it gets – the Cardiff native can ride switch including his spins, grinds, and foot positioning. His highlight combo sequence was absolutely mind-blowing: hanger to overcrank to backwards crook to backover, plus switch footed switch over crank arm slide that had the crowd losing it! Godwin also strung together video part-level tricks such as switch snaggle tooth, feeble 270, toboggan, opposite tailwhip, plus those insane rail combos for 89.33 points and his first gold medal!

I don’t know how it happened, but being on the podium these past two weeks is insane! It’s nice that the more technical riding and less flashy riding gets some love. I really appreciate it, said Godwin.

...

HISTORIC WIN: Godwin became the eighth unique winner of BMX Street and proved that technical precision beats flashy moves every time! Godwin now owns three X Games medals (one gold, one silver, one bronze).

WOMEN’S SKATEBOARD PARK: COCONA HIRAKI MAKES HISTORY WITH RECORD-BREAKING SILVER

...

RECORD BREAKER: X Games Salt Lake City opened with a major surprise in SONIC Women's Skateboard Park when 16-year-old Cocona Hiraki from Hokkaido, Japan, stole the show with silver! Like that, Hiraki became the most decorated woman in X Games Park history!

TECHNICAL PERFECTION: Earning her highest score on the second run, Hiraki put together frontside ollie the hip, backside nosegrind the vert corner, backside crailslide the extension, gap to frontside lipslide, backside tailslide, backside Smith grind the deep end, frontside nosegrind over the hip, frontside stalefish the extension, frontside Smith grind, backside lipslide the hip, and kickflip Indy over the box for 83.66 points!

...

REDEMPTION TIME: Don’t count out Trew yet! The skateboard phenomenon with the most gold medals in women’s skateboarding will be back for Skateboard Vert and Skateboard Vert Best Trick, looking to bounce back from the upset!

Hiraki now owns five X Games medals (one gold, three silver, and one bronze) and the record for most X Games Park medals in women's skateboarding!

MOTO X BEST TRICK: RICHARDS BROTHERS MAKE HISTORY WITH DOUBLE PODIUM

...

BROTHERS ON THE PODIUM X Games Salt Lake City Day 1 ended with pure magic. Australian brothers Tom and Ben Richards claimed silver and bronze in Moto X Best Trick! This marks the first time brothers have stood on an X Games podium together since 2005!

ROOKIE SENSATION: In his X Games debut, 22-year-old Tom Richards proved age is just a number! The youngest rider in the field dropped a mind-bending body varial on his first attempt, superman seat grab into Indy air, barrel roll, then grabbing the back fender, which bent to 90 degrees during the trick! The crowd went absolutely wild as he scored 93.00 points for silver!

...

BIG BRO BACKS IT UP: Not to be outdone, 24-year-old Ben Richards kept his hot streak alive! Fresh off silver at X Games Osaka just a week ago, Ben stomped his signature Special Flip, a 360 body varial in his seat while airborne, for 91.33 points and bronze!

...

CARPENTERS TO X GAMES PROS: Both brothers trained as carpenters before becoming pro freestyle riders, honing their dirtbike skills at Jackson Strong's compound. Talk about a career change that paid off! Their mentor Jackson Strong finished fourth on Friday with 89.66 points and still pulled a technical frontflip seat grab Indy over the gap.

Ben Richards now owns two X Games medals (one silver, one bronze) while Tom just announced himself to the world in the best way possible!
