This Way In …

A Monster Energy preview of the 2024 Corona Fiji Pro

Location, Location, Location

Fiji returns! It’s been seven years since the Championship Tour descended on crystal clear waters of Cloudbreak, a wave that many top pros claim to be best in the world. The idyllic reef pass hosts a sometimes rippable, sometimes punishing left-hander, with the white sand shores of Tavarua and Namotu Islands close by. Warm water, perfect surf, palm trees. It’s no wonder this was everyone’s favorite tour stop. Thing is, Gabriel Medina is the only surfer on our roster that was even on tour when they were competing here. How will the new blood react to this fabled wave, especially as they compete for the last time to make the Final Five? Oh, the excitement!

The Corona Fiji Pro runs from August 20 - 29. Log on to worldsurfleague.com to cheer on the Monster team!

Monster Threats

Ethan Ewing: He’s clinging on to the fifth spot, just above teammate Yago Dora — but Ethan has a strong grip.

Yago Dora: Essentially, if he finishes above Ethan, he’ll take the last spot of the Final Five. He’ll be dangerous here.

Gabriel Medina: Gabe will pretty much need to win the event to clinch a spot in the finals. He won here in 2016, and betting markets have him as the favorite.

Crosby Colapinto: Unlikely to make the Final Five, but if he finishes strong, he’ll take the coveted Rookie Of The Year title. Go Cros!

Seth Moniz: Seth will look to finish strong in Fiji, and take that momentum into the 2025 season.

Bettylou Sakura Johnson: Her comfort in heavy, shallow reef breaks will serve her well at Cloudbreak.

Three questions

How’s the forecast? So far, so meh. But things can change quickly in the South Pacific, so we could see some goods delivered in the back half of the waiting period.

Why was Fiji ever off the tour? Logistics. Politics. Money. Blah, blah, blah. It’s back, baby.

When are the Finals? A single day of glory between September 6 and 14, at Lower Trestles in San Clemente.
